David Backes: American Hero
David Backes is an American professional hockey player currently playing for the St. Louis Blues. On New Years, David had the privilege to be named to the USA Olympic Hockey Team.
Since then, he has shown what it means to be a true American hero.
The night after he was named to the Olympic Roster, Backes and the Blues took on the Chicago Blackhawks. During that game, David fought Canadian Olympian Jonathan Toews.
A mere five nights later, David and the Blues travelled to Anaheim to take on the Ducks. When he looked up and down the roster, he had a myriad of Olympians to beat down. Backes chose sniper Corey Perry, another Canadian, and beat him down.
If you think Backes was finished there, you are terribly wrong. Another five nights had passed and David Backes was thirsting for Canadian blood. When the Columbus Blue Jackets strolled into St. Louis earlier tonight, Backes knew what he had to do. Take out Canadian superstar Rick Nash. Needless to say, an American Hero like David Backes does not ever not accomplish his mission.
America is going through a tough time right now, nobody can doubt that. However, with heroes like David Backes on our side, we will be fine.
Thank you, David.

Great job by Backes sending a message to the Canadian Olympians, and well, plain doing his job. As most fan's of the St.Louis Blues will know, that's exactly what David Backes brings to the table, lots of grit and toughness, with the added bonus of some goal scoring. As far as him being classified an American hero for this work, wow, that just sounds dumb. There are plenty of REAL American hero's, all around the world, and right here in the US of A, that fight the real bad guys and make real sacrifices to earn the title of American Hero. He's just kickin' some Canadian tail, and putting them on notice. I don't see that as very heroic, just really cool and certainly patriotic to some degree, but not to the degree of American Hero.
ReplyDeleteUSA!!!
ReplyDeletegoing after johnathen toews what a goof american hero shake your head
ReplyDeleteBased on the remaining Blues schedule, who else can you see Backes fighting before the Olympics? I wouldn't be surprised if he has a Team Canada roster in his locker, crossing off names as he goes.
ReplyDeleteNASH CLEARLY BEAT ON BACKLESS.
ReplyDeleteBackes was born in Canada
ReplyDeletenash won the tilt, and if he tries to fight with thornton, iginla, or morrow he's in trouble
ReplyDeletebackes was born in Minnesota buddy
ReplyDeleteno no no no
ReplyDeletecanada
thats ok though, most of your heroes were born in Canada
ReplyDeleteWOW. Some times its like Americans are a bunch of idiot savants when it comes to engendering hatred from the rest of the world. You're deifying a guy becuase he's systematically attacking players from a team he's not even playing yet? He'd be a hero if he scored the game winning goal in game seven of the gold medal round, or pulled a kid out of a burning building, THEN he'd be a hero. Heroism is not something that is defined by violence but rather compassion, dignity and hard work. Get a clue.
ReplyDeleteWOW. Sometimes its like people are like a bunch of idiots and lack a sense of humor. I am pretty sure this article is satirical.
ReplyDeleteGet a clue.
Kelly's a great gal
ReplyDeleteGood stuff bud, I had no idea Backes was chasin' around us Canucks. I mentioned in a tweet, good for us that our goal scorers aren't afraid to answer the bell. I played Backes in college, and its thoroughly intimidating that he plays so rough and scores so often. A definite boost to your American boys. www.jtbourne.com
ReplyDeleteAlex Burrows' a great guy
ReplyDeleteI would like to thank everybody who read, commented, tweeted, and posted links about this story. Be sure to check out the rest of the stuff here in The Common Room and check back for more updates. And to Alex Burrows, Stephane Auger can eat it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize there were seven games in the gold medal round. I thought there was just one. Learn something new everyday...
ReplyDeleteYou forgot to mention that after the Toews decided to drop the gloves, he threw up twice in the penalty box.
ReplyDeleteUSA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
ReplyDeleteTo agree with others - pretty sure this article is a satire. These players all know each other and I'm sure he's generating a little friendly rivalry and heat for the Olympics, and not waging war on Canada.
ReplyDeleteI agree the article is funny, but are you really bragging about fighting Toews, Perry and Nash? Only one of those three has anything even remotely resembling a decent fight card. Let him take on someone like Weber, Pronger, Iginla or Richards. Then you can be proud. Right now it's like a grade 6 bragging about taking a grade 3's lunch money
ReplyDeleteA hockey player got into some fights so is therefore a symbol of the greatness of America?
ReplyDeleteReally? Wow.
The story made me laugh; the comments made me cringe. What's it like going through life without a sense of humor?
ReplyDeletethe most heart-warming story i've heard all year...
ReplyDeletebackes asshole!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fucking asshole and whimp, he checked swiss Julien Springer so hard and mean that he almost became paraplegic. An american hero ? Yeah right...
ReplyDeleteBackes is an idiot. I hope he threatens to break Joe Thornton's or Chris Pronger's neck on Sunday...
ReplyDeleteSo i guess your a tough guy when you pick a fight with the guy's who don't fight...they score goals.. I think it's a little more heroic to stand up for yourself and still fight the meathead..
ReplyDeleteCanada is an embarrasment
ReplyDeleteand to the guy who said that backes doesnt back up his scoring..??
how about the end to end goal to open the olypmics and your damn right Americans support the ass kicking of canadians haha
i hope backes brings this to the table in the olympics and really adds a different grittier element to the game
and backes was def born in Minneapolis,Minn. United States of America.. dumb canadian
ReplyDeleteI hope he brings it too... Maybe he'll hook up with someone who can fight.... Having an awesome international reputation makes you an embarrasment ...lol.... fucking douche ..haha!
ReplyDelete1. to whoever brought up the fact that the only american heroes are soldiers, get a sense of humor, this is an article about sports, there is no reason to bring that into this, everyone knows what a great job soldiers do for this country.
ReplyDelete2. backes is an american hero, he is giving a smile and hope to us americans that we can beat the canadians and win a gold medal.
3. i hope some day i can score the game winning goal in game 7 of the gold medal round.
4. i fully support backes and think that he has played great thusfar through the olympics and i can only hope that when he plays the canadians later today that he comes out hitting, and lays some of the canadians on their backs.
5. richards sucks and would get raped in a fight by backes; however, pronger is a monster and noone intelligent should ever fight him.
LoL... how did he even make the team??? 35 points.. wow He's the only player on my bro's hockey pool theat he regrets because such a lack of performance this year...Hero..hehe
ReplyDeleteaside from all the bickering it Should be a very entertaining game.. ENJOY GUY'S (go canada)
ReplyDeleteRafalski = American hero. (go canada)
ReplyDeleteFAIL!
ReplyDeletewhy doesn't he pick a fight with someone who can actually fight. I can beat up on my little brother all day too, although Nash is a big boy. Anyway, silver looks good on them, maybe too good! GO CANADA GO
ReplyDeleteYeah, but Nash had the better of him....lol..
ReplyDeleteBACKES the American Hero = FAIL
"Maybe next time but i doubt it"
And no i'm not Canadian... But your rude anti-Canada point of view just shows there are still some hillbillies in this country that need a little global education and experience.. Backes should have been on the womans team... then you could brag about him beating a couple of them up too....lol

ReplyDeleteDavid Backes isn't my hero because he plays excellent I know I should recognize he do that very well, but he's my hero because he got married with that beautiful woman.
